American Ballet Theatre Wraps Season With Promotions And A Departure

American Ballet Theatre ended its annual spring season at the Metropolitan Opera House with four major promotions and one farewell.

Soloists Sarah Lane, Christine Shevchenko and Devon Teuscher were all promoted to the top rank of principal dancer. On the men’s side, Calvin Royal III made the jump from corps de ballet to soloist. Click below for a slideshow of images and more details on each dancer.

Also making end-of-season news was the company’s announcement that principal dancer Veronika Part would be leaving the company after her final performance on Saturday, July 8.

Part trained at the Vaganova Ballet Academy and danced with the Kirov Ballet, now Mariinksy. In 2009, she joined ABT as a soloist and distinguished herself with lush, textured dancing.

Her chilling performances as Myrta in “Giselle” had few parallels. A clear and classical dancer, she had a regal air that gave her dramatic roles sharp edge.

According to the New York Times, Part’s departure is a result of her contract not being renewed. Fans rallied at the news and petitioned ABT’s artistic leadership to reverse the decision.
