Barre Workout Videos Bring Joffrey Ballet Dancers and JW Marriott Together

Here’s Your Chance To Workout With The Joffrey Ballet

The Joffrey Ballet is taking its workouts on the road — and straight into JW Marriott & Resorts hotel rooms.

The Chicago dance company has created a series of fitness videos called “Behind the Barre” that share exercises dancers use in their hotel rooms while on tour.

“People don’t have to be ballet dancers to benefit from the exercises,” says Joffrey artistic director Ashley Wheater. “But they tap into the current trend for dance and ballet-based workouts.”

The movements are based simple barre exercises, basic stretching, and core strengthening.

Resort guests access “Behind the Barre” via smartphone and on-demand in hotel room televisions. The videos are led by Wheater with demonstrations by Joffrey dancer Graham Maverick and former company member Anastacia Holden, who retired after the 2016-2017 season.

And this isn’t the first collaboration between Marriott and the Joffrey. In 2014, the Joffrey created Poise & Grace, a series of training exercises designed to teach Marriott associates how to enhance posture, breathing, and grace of movement in their daily work.

For “Behind the Barre,” Wheater says that the Joffrey followed the model they used when developing Poise & Grace, but made it strategically targeted for resort guests.

“The workouts are designed so that beginners can get what they need, but the intensity can be increased to make them more challenging,” he said “People can do the workouts on their own schedule and don’t have buy equipment or go to the gym.”

The exercises are especially helpful after long travel or when suffering from jet lag,  according to Wheater, “or when they wake up in the morning and just want some time to themselves to relax.”

Behind the Barre videos are centered on the themes of “calm,” “balance” and “invigorate” and were filmed at JW Marriott’s new resort in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Mitzi Gaskins, Global Brand Leader at JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts, said the series was developed for guests who have interests in culture and well-being.

“Behind the Barre” debuted at the recently-renovated JW Marriott Essex House in New York City and will be launched at select JW Marriott resorts in fall 2017.
