Milwaukee Dance Hopefuls Compete at Annual DanceMKE Competition

With A New Dance Competition, Milwaukee Now Has More Than Snow And Cheese

Along with outdoor dance festivals, summer brings dance competitions. And Milwaukee’s DanceMKE 2017 is a thriving example.

Launched last year at the Marcus Center for Performing Arts, this free event runs through August 22 and is part of the summer performance series Live at Peck Pavilion. In it, 20 groups of dancers will compete for nine spots in the finals. Participants range in style from hip hop, salsa, lyrical and ballroom to American Tribal Belly Dance, Mexican folklore, contemporary fusion and tap. And they’re vying for not only bragging rights but scholarships and cash.

The first preliminary round on August 1 produced three finalists: Brookfield Center For The Arts, whose routine incorporated ballet, hip hop and acrobatics; SueMO Dance Company, with a contemporary routine; and soloist Nate Ramos, who blended freestyle, improve and storytelling. Check out the first two below.
