Sorry Beyonce, This Formation Ballroom Dance Is Completely Mesmerizing
No need for these dancers to “get into formation.” They already are. And they’re in such perfect sync, they make Beyonce’s dancers look off beat.
Russian dance team DUET Perm are so incredible at Formation Ballroom, it’s hard to look away at their stunning performance in the World DanceSport Federation competition from 2014.
So what is Formation Ballroom, anyway?
Long before Queen Bey’s “Formation” was a thing, the word was associated as a style of ballroom dance.
The international style has been a competitive sport since the 1930’s, with teams still competing today in the distinct style, just like DUET Perm.
Using complicated patterns, flowing ripples and extreme precision, the style relies heavily on team work, with couples dancing in sync with each other and the larger group.
Formation comes in two styles: “Standard” is a medley of Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quick-step; While “Latin” mixes in Samba, Cha-cha, Rumba, Pado Doble and Jive.
DUET Perm’s routine was part of the World Formation Latin competition, which explains why it’s hard to even keep up watching the group dance. So Dance.com broke it down for you.
